Hey Oops, I just downloaded your program and I think it is amazing. Just one thing. I don't know if it's only my computer or not, but when I tried to minimize my puzzle only, so as to work on another puzzle, the error box popped up and said the program needed to close. Thanks for all your work.

One more thing, and you may have already covered it. Is there any way to convert from a pdf file into a file compatible with your program? I have a ton of pdf puzzles that I would like to solve with your program which I think is awesome.

I don't think PDFs can be converted easily. I suggest pulling up a .non file in Notepad or Wordpad and taking a look at it; you will find that the format is fairly simple to follow, and you can just copy the clues in. Make sure to set the puzzle size and, for title, the serial number.

I'm going to take some of the puzzles from magazines I've acquired and use this tool to reproduce them so I can print them on single sheets of paper, my much preferred solving method. Note that out of respect for Conceptis (in some cases) and the magazines that I will not be freely distributing these recreations, so no inquiries please.

Just a couple of quick thinks to say:

1) WOW! Thanks for a brill program. No bugs found so far!
2) Is it likely for anyone to put up an archive of lmf files from the past free weekly puzzles because now that i can play them off line i am re-addicted. I never really bothered to download them using webpicker in the past cos there was no way to play off line. I'd be willing to put up an archive on my webpage, if anyone could send me the files, but i don't want to take axels honoured place as 'provider of past puzzles'!

Be happy everyone

Hi Ooops,

great program, thanks. I have a problem (or maybe it's me) with loading from the web. It only loads the first puzzle of each type. Is that intentional, or am I doing something wrong? I was really keen on this weeks lap4, since it doesn't work properly online (window closes after a while without warning or error). If the load from web feature is not supposed to download it, is there another way I can load that lap4, or doesn't your program work with the colour puzzles? I tried to right click the link for solving online but that opens the puzzle instead of showing a rightmousebutton menu (don't know the proper English name for this menu, rightmousebutton menu is a literal translation of the ridiculously long Dutch name for it).

I hope you can help me! Thanks in advance.

In software development we call that a "context menu" in English. But what you said is just as valid as anything else I've heard.

As to why the right mouse button opens the puzzle, this is because the play online section is actually a Java applet. This means it doesn't behave like a regular link or text on a web page and won't have a context menu. If you right-click on the "solve on paper" links, you can get a context menu to save the file to disk or something, but it won't work on the "solve online" links.

I've tried Ooops' program and it does work with color puzzles and it seems to download all the puzzles for me, so it could be an error on your end. Without getting more information, though, I wouldn't be able to diagnose what the actual cause could be.

Hi jhitchin,

thanks for the quick reply. Context menu, should have known that. That name is also a lot better than the lengthy Dutch equivalent (which is one of the reasons I love the English language so much, so to the point!).
I don't really know what extra information to give you. I don't get any error messages, it just takes the first puzzle of each type, regardless of whether I save them all in the same directory or in three different directories (I've tried both). I'm running wXP on a 2.80 Ghz Pentium 4 notebook. Is this isn't all the information you need (and it probably isn't) could you tell me what information you need?
thanks again.

To solve the situation: jhitchin and mawa are both right. My program DOES work with color puzzles, and yes, the last updated version only loads the first puzzle of each type. I'm so sorry! In my attempts to exchange the Internet Transfer Control with my own code I altered the Web Loading function too much and I didn't reverted it to its original state. Now there is a logical error in that part causing only one puzzle to load. I realized that on monday morning when I wanted to download myself the new free weeklies... (Note: This only applies to the last version 0.91)

Please get your update here:
http://www.pixelgames.de/picpuz/PicPuz0.91Bugfix1.zip

...then you can download all 4 puzzles of each type again. I also fixed the bug with minimizing the puzzle windows (reported by Jpole).

Conversion of puzzles from PDF to a program readable format is not impossible but very complex. Additionally, If I ever manage to get it automated it will not work for all PDFs, or better: It will not work for PDFs at all, but for PostScript files you create of them but just not for all...

I have to add a note concerning the large LAPs (eg. the fourth of this week): The larger a puzzle the more problems you'll get with the higher zoom factors. This week's LAP 4 for example cannot be zoomed to "default zoom", otherwise you will get graphics errors at the bottom and the right edges of the puzzle. I'm still searching for a solution but as a workaround you can zoom it out until you see the whole puzzle well.

Hi Ooops,
I downloaded the bugfix and replaced the old executable with the new one and now it works fine! Thank you, now I can solve that LAP4 I've been having problems with when playing online. I'll keep using your program though, it works very well, similar to the Conceptis applet I've gotten used to, with the added bonus of being able to save it. As a projectmanager for a software developing company I've seen beta-versions that are a lot worse...
Thanks again and keep up the good work!

I saw that bug, too. Just went to Axel's program and saved everything like always. I'm keeping two copies NEway, so I can archive when each puzzle is released.

Speaking of which, a few weeks are missing, I have some gaps to fill.

Great program, but I have one complaint/suggestion. Is there a way to make it so that the title of the puzzle is not displayed in the title bar? I prefer to be surprised by the picture as I work through the puzzle.

Best answer to that: don't look at the title bar.

I love the program!

Just one issue--the Solve Memory doesn't seem to be working for me. I just went in and edited the registry to remove the Solved Puzzles folder entirely. When I next ran the program, it recreated it, but I solved a puzzle since then and it's still not indicating it the puzzle any differently in the open file menu. Any ideas?

This is under Windows XP--I don't know what other details might be useful.

I've noticed this, too. The Open Puzzle dialog doesn't say it's solved already.

Also, I have tested the Properties tab in the File menu while solving a puzzle. The status is "Solving".

Hello fan puzzlers!

Are you interested by big puzzles created with this excellent program?
With your e-mail adress, it is possible...(I don't yet arrive to publish my puzzles in this forum!)

Cyclone, do you have WinXP also?

If you successfully solved a puzzle, the preview window for the picture is automatically opened to indicate that it is solved. At the same time the program writes a hash of the puzzle to the registry. As Claudia writes she had deleted this folder in the registry and the program recreated it, it's a clue that at least THIS part of the program does work.
From now on, when selecting this puzzle (either in another format or with another filename) in the file open dialog, you should see a green box with a check mark just below the puzzle's type icon in the info box of the open dialog. So are you sure this check mark is not displayed?

NOTE: When you let the program solve a PAP automatically with the "PAP Solver" function, it will NOT be marked as "solved" in the "Solve Memory".

Maybe XP handles access to the registry in another way than W2K? But I hardly believe it, because Claudia's experience tells me that writing to the registry is working. Why should reading the values again be impossible? I will try to find out what's going wrong, but I have to get a PC with XP installed, first.

Claudia and Cyclone: Could you mail me which puzzles you solved and how the registry key added for that puzzle looks like?

Meanwhile, I found another bug in the Pic-A-Pix file reading routine. Some older PMF files doesn't load correctly (eg. the pmf with a picture of Marylin Monroe). So if you try to open pmf's that seem to be unsolvable, they could be affected by this issue. The bug will be fixed in the next update.

Hi! I've used this program on both XP and win98 and on neither does the solve puzzle thing work. Just thought you should know.
Brill program otherwise.

Hey, the program's awesome, I was just wondering if someone could explain to me how to make a puzzle in it. If that's not possible, is there a program that lets you make a puzzle? Please let me know, if you need to email it to me, my email is
Jpole@ocala.com
Thanks,
Jpole

Ooops, it's not registering ANY of my solved puzzles as solved. I've created bitmaps in the cases of the ones I have solved I could send if you need them. I'm guessing the registry locate was not actually set up since I installed a fresh 0.91 beta (instead of 0.90).
