I often use a variation of that technique on the Link-A-Pix puzzles For example, the 4-4 link has to "hug" the left wall (i.e. from the lower 4, go up/up/right to the other 4). If it didn't, more than one solution would be possible (because there would be room to move it back and forth). In general when solving Link-A-Pix puzzles, the "hugging" path, the one that makes the most efficient use of space that can't be used for other links, and doesn't leave "pockets" of unused cells unnecessarily, is logically necessary.
