Hello there, I just discovered that someone has been so kind to mention a puzzle I created called 'sea battle' at mvs.( http://www.mountainvistasoft.com/variations.htm ) Really nice to put my name beneath the title,I assume that must have been done by some of you.* The dutch title was 'vlootoefening' but that was not such strong title in English I suppose. Thanks again for preserving one of my best puzzle ideas. Paul *I see that my puzzle has been published in the magazine 'GAMES WORLD OF PUZZLES',didnot know that.......

Hi Paul, I was pleasantly surprised to see your post (thanks, Dave!). My name's Moshe Rubin, the owner of the Mountain Vista Software website, provider of Conceptis Battleship puzzles, Battleship moderator in Conceptis forums, and the one 'guilty' for uploading your most original Sea Battleship puzzle to the MVS site. I distinctly remember the wonderful time I had solving your puzzle in GAMES Magazine about five years ago. It took me several days to extract the last bit of information from the puzzle, enabling me to finally solve it. I am honored to meet you! Would you be willing to share your thoughts about how you composed this puzzle? How did you guarantee there was only one solution? What are your thoughts about 'Zeeslagje' (battleship) puzzles in general? Do you compose puzzles as a hobby? Looking forward to hearing from you, Moshe Rubin

Hi Moshe, It is nice to hear that you had a good time solving my puzzle.(dated aug 2000) I didnot attend that championship in 2002 and dont know anything about how people felt about this puzzle. What I know is that it was teampuzzle, but if they manage to solve it ,I couldnot get the answer. The puzzlemaking hasnot been my proffession but it has been a big commitment from 1995 to 2002. At that time I was still keeping computers out of my door so everything is handmade. I remember that I used an earlier puzzle-idea as an inspiration for the basic principle of this puzzle.Somehow it interested me to get as many dimensions as possible, where one has to switch from one to the other options to get forward. After I had the concept it took me 3 days to get to the final result.Just with paper en pencil on a blocked notebook. The proces starts backwards, that is one starts with a result following the rules of the puzzle. Then you make a puzzle that might be possible to solve by putting some shipelements (or sea) here and there. That is quite fun because you don't know if the puzzle CAN be solved but with trying you get an enormous sense of the possibilities. That is the grip needed to start arranging elements in their optimum position and intuition is also a big help doing this. The biggest threat is to give up to easily because of the excitement that the concept is working at all and you want to share it quickly. Getting more then one solution is not a problem at all,one can always put an element with sea although you should be very aware not to ruin it by giving away other possibilities to solve. Zeeslagje has been one of the main puzzles of the dutch magazine 'breinbrekers' and it was always fun to solve them, going from easy to really hard. Thanks for responding, Paul
