1. Eliminating squares using Naked Pairs in a box:

According to the text, 6 goes in b9 square, as neither c7 nor c8 can be 6, however, I cannot understand how it was determined from the given example how c8 cannot also be 6, AND why c7 and c8 cannot also be 5, and why c8 cannot also be 8 as well? Seems b9 could also be 6 or 8 as well??

Thanks.

4 cannot go in a8, a9, or b9 because there are 4s in a1 and i9. Therefore, the only places the 4 can go are c7 or c8.

9 cannot go in a8, a9, or b9 because there are 9s in a3 and b5. Therefore, the only places the 9 can go are c7 or c8.

This is the pair referred to in the technique. If c7 is 4, then c8 is 9; if c7 is 9, then c8 is 4. Therefore, neither of those squares can be anything other than 4 or 9.

6 cannot go in a8 or a9 because there is a 6 in a6.

That leaves b9 as the only square left where the 6 can go.

Hope that helps. If not, ask more questions.

Yes, helps me a lot. B9 is a 6, because c8 HAS to be a 4 or 9, so it cannot be a 5, 6 or 8. Likewise, if c7 & c8 have to be either 4 or 9, and b9 has to be a 6, then a8 & a9 have to be either a 5 or a 8. Whew! Thank you.
